Made-to-Measure vs Ready-Made Blinds: Worth It?

Ready-made blinds from a high street or online retailer are cheaper and available same-day. So it’s a fair question: what does made-to-measure actually add, beyond a higher price tag?

Fit

This is the core difference. Ready-made blinds come in fixed, standard sizes, so unless your window happens to match one exactly, you’re either trimming a blind down (not always possible, and never as neat as a true made-to-measure edge) or living with a gap that lets light in and undermines both the look and the privacy of the blind. A made-to-measure blind is built to your exact recess or face-fit measurements, with the fit as close to seamless as a manufactured product gets.

Fabric and finish choice

Ready-made blinds are limited to whatever a handful of standard sizes happen to be stocked in. Made-to- measure opens up an entire trade catalogue of fabrics, colours, textures and finishes — including blackout, thermal, and fire-retardant options — so you’re choosing based on what actually suits the room, not what happens to be in stock in your size.

Mechanism quality

The chain, cord, or motor mechanism on a budget ready-made blind is built to a price point, and it shows over time — sticking chains, uneven rolling, and mechanisms that wear out within a year or two of daily use are common complaints. Made-to-measure blinds from an established manufacturer use more robust mechanisms designed for years of daily operation, and are covered by a proper warranty.

Child safety compliance

Both ready-made and made-to-measure blinds sold in the UK today must meet the same child-safety regulations. Where made-to-measure has the edge is in the range of genuinely cordless options available — wand control, motorised systems — if minimising cords and chains matters to you.

Cost over time

Ready-made is cheaper upfront, sometimes significantly so. But a made-to-measure blind that lasts 10–15 years, fits properly from day one, and doesn’t need replacing after a poor-fitting ready-made option disappoints, often works out comparable — or better — in cost per year of use.

When ready-made makes sense

For a short-term rental, a room you’re not planning to stay in long, or a genuinely standard-sized window where budget is the overriding priority, ready-made is a perfectly reasonable choice.
