A nursery or child’s bedroom has two priorities that matter more here than almost anywhere else in the house: genuinely dark naps and nights, and window dressings that are safe around young children.

Start with child safety

Every blind we supply is fitted with an appropriate child-safety device as standard, but for a nursery or young child’s room specifically, we’d always steer you towards fully cordless options — wand-operated blinds, or motorised systems with no trailing cord or chain at all. Getting proper blackout

Consistent darkness genuinely helps babies and young children settle for naps and sleep through lighter evenings and early summer mornings. Fabric and furniture placement

Keep cots, beds, and any furniture a child could climb on positioned away from the window and any cords or chains, in line with general child-safety guidance — even a fully compliant blind is safest when it’s simply out of reach. Washable, durable fabrics are worth prioritising for a child’s room too, since spills and marks are inevitable.

Growing with the room

Many parents choose a relatively neutral or simple blind or curtain fabric for a nursery with the expectation of updating soft furnishings (cushions, a cot bumper, a rug) as a child’s taste develops, rather than replacing the blind or curtains themselves every few years. A well-made blackout blind or lined curtain will comfortably outlast the nursery stage into a toddler and young child’s room.

Our recommendation

For most nurseries and young children’s rooms, we’d suggest a wand-operated or motorised blackout roller blind as the practical core of the room, with blackout-lined curtains layered on top for extra darkness, warmth, and a softer finished look.
